Interdisciplinary Artist
Abby Turner (b. 2003, Hawaii) is a multimedia artist based in the DMV, informed by an upbringing as a military child. She will be graduating from GWU with a BFA in Fine Arts with minors in Art History and Marketing. This fall, she will be attending William & Mary in pursuit of an MA in Anthropology.

She has been featured in Box, Cloth, Spindle, a microexhibition at the GW Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., as well as the 2023 First Year Experience (FYE) Exhibition at the Meyerhoff Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland. Her research has been presented at two public talks at the GW Textile Museum, and her cartoons are published weekly in the GW Hatchet newspaper.
Artist Statement
Abby Turner operates through a lens of data collection, observation, and analysis to develop answers to her inquiries. Her curiosity surrounding human behavior and culture, natural systems, power, waste, and economic systems stems from an obsession with pattern and repetition. The cyclical nature of life and the deep-rooted connection between people, place, and time drove her deeper into the fields of anthropology, marketing, biology, and art history, where the human experience is dissected for parts.

Each facet builds a bigger picture in explaining this condition as a conscious being. Exact objects, colors, and experiences are replicated to simulate interactive installations, symbols/clues, and references to historical works, working logically to build a sci-fi-like deconstruction of reality that uncovers pain points in the real world.

Her visual language is governed by a muted color palette, symbolism, and a diverse material list, enlisting medium as the catalyst for metaphor.
