Abbytzer

About

AbbyTzer is an American multimedia artist based in Washington, D.C., whose work explores natural systems, power/control, human connection, waste, and patterns of behavior. Her work is grounded in experience, informed by research, and engaged with the passage of time, as she confronts societal norms by abstracting the idea and whittling it down to form. She draws intense feelings, dreams, and moments from reality onto the canvas, aiming to find beauty in her troubles; swings of emotions and logical decisions guide her brushstrokes. She balances methods of reasoning as she investigates solutions, reactions, and conclusions in response to the question guiding a given work. Abductive inquiries guide experimentation/exploration into material choice to best communicate the messaging by idea. In making, she relies on a plan as a base of operations, later transforming and pivoting to adapt to the problem as it develops. Making becomes a way of thinking itself.
How can an abstract idea become tangible and communicable? Drawing inspiration from the sci-fi world building of artists like Trenton Doyle Hancock, Turner creates a visual language abstracted from reality. She explores this question through interactive installations, symbols/clues, and references to historical works to create conversation within her work as Lori Anderson does. In a similar vein to Jenny Holzer, AbbyTzer utilizes marketing experience, through color, psychology, and branding, enabling clearer imagery to communicate language with a viewer by ways of persuasion. She works interdisciplinarily in medium, concept, and research, drawing inspiration from anthropology, science, and archaeology. Medium is chosen by concept, tailored to best communicate her thinking, she specializes in painting and ceramics, yet frequently learns technical skills in textiles, book arts, and printmaking as needed for works.
She lives in a world of investigation and overthinking, unable to silence a bombardment of puzzling through data and information. If questioning is second nature, observation is a prerequisite. Learning to understand people and places, pushing new perspectives and possibilities, expands her view of the world and ability to navigate its nuances.
